Understanding Playa del Carmen
Playa is walkable—you don't need a car unless exploring beyond town. Quinta Avenida runs north-south, one block from the beach; the numbered streets (calles) run east-west. Lower numbers are south (ferry terminal, older town); higher numbers are north (newer, more upscale). The beach clubs charge for loungers but usually include food/drink credit. Cozumel ferries leave from the main pier. The town has grown fast—what was jungle 20 years ago is now hotels. Traffic on the highway (307) is terrible; allow extra time. The vibe is younger and more international than Cancun. Spring break affects Playa less than Cancun but still brings crowds. Prices are lower than Cancun but higher than towns further south.
