Hungary sits in the Carpathian Basin, a landlocked heart of Central Europe surrounded by seven countries. The Danube bisects the country and famously divides Budapest into hilly Buda and flat Pest. The Great Hungarian Plain (puszta) stretches east, while wine country rolls through the north. Despite its modest size, Hungary's cultural influence – through music, science, cuisine, and design – far exceeds its geographic footprint.

History here is complicated. The Austro-Hungarian Empire made Budapest one of Europe's great capitals. The 20th century brought devastation – two world wars, fascist then communist rule, and the crushed 1956 uprising. Since 1989's transition, Hungary has modernized dramatically while preserving remarkable architectural heritage that escaped both wartime bombing and communist demolition.

For travelers, Hungary rewards depth over breadth. Budapest deserves multiple days to properly experience its neighborhoods, baths, and nightlife. Wine regions like Eger and Tokaj offer serious tastings at gentle prices. Lake Balaton provides summer beach culture, Central European style. And everywhere, the Hungarian approach – creative, intellectual, slightly melancholic but persistently stylish – makes for compelling experiences.
