Cartagena Map Overview

🏰 Cartagena

The Jewel of the Caribbean

🇨🇴 Welcome to Cartagena

Cartagena is Colombia's colonial jewel—a UNESCO walled city where bougainvillea spills over balconies and the Caribbean laps at 400-year-old fortifications. This was Spain's treasure port. The romance is real: walk the walls at sunset, get lost in the old town, and understand why García Márquez set his love stories here.

Understanding Cartagena

Cartagena is HOT—30-35°C with high humidity. The Walled City and Getsemaní are the tourist zones. Prices are higher than other Colombia. Town beaches are mediocre—boat to islands for better. Street vendors are persistent; 'no gracias' works. Sunsets over the wall are mandatory.

⚡ Essential Cartagena Tips

• It's HOT. Hydrate constantly, use sunscreen, plan midday for indoors.

• The Walled City is walkable and safe. Use Uber outside the walls.

• Town beaches are mediocre. Boat to Playa Blanca or Rosario Islands.

🗺️ Cartagena Areas

The Walled City (Centro) is the UNESCO colonial core. Getsemaní is bohemian. Bocagrande has beaches and high-rises. Islands offer beach escapes.

Colonial Treasure

The Walled City is why you come to Cartagena—cobblestone streets, colonial mansions, churches on every corner. Built to protect Spanish treasure from pirates, the walls still encircle the old town.

Walk without a map; getting lost is the point. Every corner reveals balconies, bougainvillea, hidden plazas.

Bohemian Soul

Getsemaní was sketchy a decade ago; now it's the creative heart. Street art covers every wall. Plaza Trinidad comes alive at night. The vibe is younger, cheaper, more local than the Walled City.

This is where Cartagena's real culture lives—champeta music, Afro-Colombian heritage, community spirit.
