Understanding Brussels

Brussels is officially bilingual—French and Dutch—though French dominates in daily life. English is widely spoken. The city is the EU and NATO headquarters, which brings a cosmopolitan feel and international dining scene. Don't expect Paris polish; Brussels has a grittier, more authentic charm. The Grand Place is legitimately spectacular, but the real Brussels is in the Art Nouveau houses of Saint-Gilles, the African quarter of Matonge, the vintage shops of Saint-Gery. Belgian food culture centers on frites (not French fries—they're Belgian), chocolate, waffles, mussels, and especially beer. The abbey beers and lambics are world-class. Weather is typically Belgian: prepare for rain anytime. The city is compact and walkable; the metro and tram system handles everything else efficiently.

Victor Hugo called the Grand Place the most beautiful square in Europe—and he wasn't wrong. The Gothic Town Hall, gilded guild houses, and intricate facades create an overwhelming spectacle, especially when lit at night.

The surrounding streets have the famous Manneken Pis (smaller than expected), the Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert (Europe's oldest shopping arcade), and yes, tourist traps. Eat elsewhere; admire here.
