Forget Skyscanner, Kayak, and Momondo. Google Flights is the single most powerful flight search tool available, and it's completely free. Most people use it to search for a specific route on specific dates. That's barely scratching the surface. Here's how to actually use it.
The Explore Feature
This is the feature that changes everything. Instead of searching from City A to City B, open Google Flights, enter your departure city, and leave the destination blank. Click 'Explore.' You'll see a map of the entire world with prices to every destination. Filter by continent, trip length, budget, and whether you want nonstop flights. This is how you find the deals you didn't know existed — $300 round-trip to Lisbon, $450 to Tokyo, $180 to Mexico City.
The Date Grid
When you search a specific route, click 'Date grid' or 'Price graph' in the top menu. The date grid shows you the cheapest fare for every combination of departure and return dates across a two-month window. One glance tells you whether flying Tuesday-Wednesday saves $200 versus Friday-Sunday. The price graph shows the cheapest fare for each departure date. Green dates are cheapest, red are most expensive.
Price Tracking & Alerts
Found a good fare but not ready to book? Toggle on 'Track prices' and Google will email you when the price drops. This is especially powerful 2-4 months before travel when prices fluctuate the most. Google will even tell you if the current price is 'low' or 'typical' for that route based on historical data.
The Nearby Airports Trick
Check the 'nearby airports' box for both departure and arrival. Flying into a secondary airport can save hundreds. Rome Ciampino vs Fiumicino, London Stansted vs Heathrow, Tokyo Narita vs Haneda — sometimes the cheaper airport is perfectly convenient. Google shows you all the options side by side.
Multi-City and Stopovers
Use the multi-city search to build creative itineraries. Fly into Bangkok, out of Tokyo, and the total fare is often the same or less than a round-trip to either city. This lets you see multiple destinations on a single ticket without backtracking.
